چکیده

In June, 1990, as part of the GLOBE-2 experiment, calibrated lidar backscatter was measured as a function of altitude at wavelengths of 0.532, 1.064, 1.54 and 9.25 μm. We have used inversions of the data collected 300 km west of Honolulu to obtain bimodal aerosol distribution models throughout the lowest 1280 m of the marine boundary layer. The models suggest that the coarse mode concentrations remain relatively constant with altitude, while changes in the fine mode concentration cause most of the variation in the total backscatter. The coarse mode, although contributing little to the total scattering area, has a significant effect on the lidar ratios and thus on the overall optical depth.

Ceilometer lidar comparison: backscatter coefficient retrieval and signal-to-noise ratio determination

The potential of a new generation of ceilometer instruments for aerosol monitoring has been studied in the Ceilometer Lidar Comparison (CLIC) study. The used ceilometer was developed by Jenoptik, Germany, and is designed to find both thin cirrus clouds at tropopause level and aerosol layers at close ranges during day and night-time. The comparison study was performed to determine up to which al...

Three years of routine Raman lidar measurements of tropospheric aerosols: Backscattering, extinction, and residual layer height

We have performed a three-year series of routine lidar measurements at preselected times. The measurements were performed between 1 December 1997, and 30 November 2000, at Kühlungsborn, Germany (5407 N, 1146 E). Using a Rayleigh/Mie/Raman lidar system, we measured the aerosol backscatter coefficients at three wavelengths and the extinction coefficient at one wavelength. The present data analysi...

Determining the contribution of volcanic ash and boundary layer aerosol in backscatter lidar returns: A three‐component atmosphere approach

[1] A solution of the lidar equation is discussed, that permits combining backscatter and depolarization measurements to quantitatively distinguish two different aerosol types with different depolarization properties. The method has been successfully applied to simultaneous observations of volcanic ash and boundary layer aerosol obtained in Exeter, United Kingdom, on 16 and 18 April 2010, permi...

Aerosol lidar intercomparison in the framework of the EARLINET project. 3. Raman lidar algorithm for aerosol extinction, backscatter, and lidar ratio.

An intercomparison of the algorithms used to retrieve aerosol extinction and backscatter starting from Raman lidar signals has been performed by 11 groups of lidar scientists involved in the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). This intercomparison is part of an extended quality assurance program performed on aerosol lidars in the EARLINET. Lidar instruments and aerosol backscatt...

Environmental Physics Compact Micro-pulse Backscatter Lidar and Examples of Measurements in the Planetary Boundary Layer

We present a micro-pulse depolarization-backscatter lidar for unattended measurements. The presented lidar originates from a lidar for a high-altitude aircraft, what is demonstrated in its compactness and the possibility for transportation with minimum resources. The lidar determines the aerosol backscatter coefficient in the PBL and lower troposphere, as well as the mixing layer height during ...
